The Problem of Burmese Pythons in South Florida

Burmese pythons are a menace, particularly in South Florida. Let’s see how they affect the human and animal population. Burmese pythons, as the name implies, are snakes with a huge presence in Burma (now Myanmar). These pythons thrive well around the territories linked with the Bay of Bengal. But it’s fascinating how these creatures made their way to Southern Florida.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that these snakes may have been around for almost a century, but the first sighting in Florida was in the early ‘80s. Since the sighting of the first Burmese python, their numbers have grown to hundreds of thousands in less than three decades. These pythons prey on many species and are commonly found in the Everglades. It is on record that several species have been noted to reduce drastically in their numbers since the python population began increasing.

Currently, there’s evidence from reports that Burmese pythons could get to about 400,000 in Southern Florida alone, and most of this population growth is attributed to the Everglades. The natural park is one of the best breeding spots for these snakes, and that isn’t all!

The Burmese python is notoriously invasive, and tends to rapidly take over any habitat it enters. These pythons can feed on other smaller snakes, and it doesn’t take them long to overtake the native snake population. A female Burmese python can live for more than two decades, and is bound to give birth every year. When these snakes give birth, at least forty to fifty eggs are expected.

Mammalian disturbance has been greatly recorded in recent years, and the only dominant species these pythons can’t seem to overrun are humans. With their disruptive potential, they’re gradually taking over Southern Florida with more observed reductions in animal populations where they thrive.
